Job interview in Lithuania: questions, sample answers and your rights
🟢 Updated: 2026-11-03
A short guide for warehouse, courier, factory, service and office jobs. Part one is law (what an employer may and may not ask, probation) checked against official texts. Part two is editorial advice: typical questions with sample answers you can adapt.
What the employer may not ask
- Pay at current or previous jobs. Since 2026-06-07 the Labour Code (Art. 41) forbids demanding information unrelated to your health, qualification or circumstances directly related to the work, and expressly information about the pay you received in current or previous employment. You may answer with the pay you expect instead.
- Family and private plans: marital status, partner, children, pregnancy or plans to have children. Equal-opportunity guidance says to ask only about professional matters – for example whether you can meet job requirements such as business trips.
- Anything unrelated to the job – age, ethnic origin, religion and similar. VDAI data-protection guidance adds that employers should not ask for family status, age or home address unless they can justify why the job needs it.
What the employer must give you
- If the company has a collective agreement, you must receive its provisions before you sign the employment contract (Labour Code Art. 41).
- The employer must notify Sodra of the hiring at least 1 working day before you start (Art. 42): do not start work without a signed contract.
Probation (from 2026-11-01)
- Standard maximum: 3 months.
- Up to 6 months only if your contract pay is at least twice the latest published national average gross monthly wage (about €5,000 – check the current figure). For shorter fixed-term contracts the period must be proportionally shorter.
- Probation must be agreed when the contract is signed and cannot be extended later by agreement. Procedures started before 2026-10-31 stay under the old rules (VDI).
Common questions and sample answers (editorial)
- Tell me about yourself.
I have 3 years in warehouse work, last at X, where I picked about 120 orders a shift with no errors. I am reliable, work shifts and live 20 minutes from your site. - Why do you want this job?
The schedule suits me, the company is close to my home, and I like work where results are measurable – I know your delivery volumes and want to be part of it. - What are your strengths?
Punctuality and accuracy. At my last job I had zero missed shifts in a year. - What is your weakness?
I used to take on too much and delay asking for help; now I tell my team lead early. Choose a real, minor weakness and show what you did about it. - I have no experience – why should we hire you?
I learn fast: I completed a forklift course/volunteered/worked informally on X. I can start at once and I am ready for training. - What salary do you expect?
Based on the market and the duties, I expect €X–€Y gross per month. (You do not have to say what you earn now – that cannot be demanded.) Check the calculator to know your take-home pay. - Can you work shifts / weekends?
Yes, evenings and two weekends a month; I would like to see the schedule a month ahead. - What is your level of Lithuanian / English?
Be honest: A2 Lithuanian, fluent Russian, B1 English – and what you do to improve. For jobs without Lithuanian see this page. - Describe a difficult situation at work (STAR).
Situation – Task – Action – Result: a rush order, what you did, what happened. Two sentences each.
Questions to ask the employer
- Contract type (fixed-term or open-ended), working hours and the shift schedule?
- Pay: gross per hour/month, when it is paid, how overtime and night work are paid?
- Probation length and what is expected during it?
- Is accommodation or transport provided and at what cost? (jobs with accommodation)
- Training, uniform and safety instructions?
If you were asked something improper
Stay calm and steer back: “I would rather answer about my skills for this role.” You can write down the question afterwards and contact the Equal Opportunities Ombudsperson’s Office (lygybe.lt) or the State Labour Inspectorate (vdi.lrv.lt). Prepare your CV and cover letter beforehand.
FAQ
Can an employer ask how much I earn now?
No. The Labour Code (Art. 41, in force since 2026-06-07) forbids demanding information about the pay you received in current or previous employment.
Can they ask if I plan to have children?
No – questions on marital status, children and pregnancy are not related to the job. Employers should ask whether you can meet the job requirements instead.
How long can probation last in Lithuania?
Up to 3 months; up to 6 months only if the contract pay is at least twice the national average gross wage. Probation cannot be extended by agreement (rules from 2026-11-01).
Should I name a salary at the interview?
It is better to name a range based on the market and the duties. Use gross figures, because contracts are written in gross pay.
What should I bring?
ID or passport and residence permit/visa if you are a foreigner, CV and certificates relevant to the job.
